Update on Ohio Monster Guidebook...

It's been awhile since I had an update on my upcoming book, so here is one now.

The book is finished, although I haven't worked on anything with it for awhile as I've been busy with other things. But, soon I am going to start the publishing process again and I hope to be able to have it out within the next few months or so…

And here's a little preview from the book about a Sasquatch sighting in Salt Fork State Park:

"One [Bigfoot] sighting that has gotten some publicity occurred in 2013. On Memorial Day weekend, the Eddy family decided to go hiking at Salt Fork State Park. They probably never dreamed that they would encounter what they did that day.
"The group consisted of Bob and Melissa Eddy, and their children, Sarah (16), Andrew (14), Emily (11), and Jersey (5). They were hiking on Morgan's Knob Loop Trail, and about 30 minutes into the hike Bob, Melissa, and Sarah decided to take a break at a picnic table that sits on top of a hill on the path. The other kids kept on walking and went down the hill.

View from the top of the hill

"About 15 minutes later, the parents heard the kids screaming. Bob ran down, expecting one of them to be hurt, but instead found all of them standing around each other. They told him that they had seen a Bigfoot looking at them from behind a tree.
"Bob went over to where they said they saw the Bigfoot and found nothing. He thought they may have seen a black bear. He did note, however, that the woods were very quiet. (That is reported quite a lot when a Bigfoot is seen or is thought to be in the area).
"After the family got back together, they heard a smack! like wood hitting a tree. Ten seconds later that was answered by another smack! from a different location and then a third, also from a different location.
"The SouthEastern Ohio Society for Bigfoot Investigation (SOSBI) happened to be having one of their group campouts at the park that weekend, and Melissa's sister told her this after she called her. Seven members of the group went to the area, and while they were walking down the trail, heard wood knocks like the family had.
"The researchers checked the area but didn't find anything. Then everyone went to the group campground and the family reported their sighting.
"Later, the Eddys were contacted by the TV channel Destination America. Their story was featured on the Ohio Grassman episode of the show Monsters and Mysteries in America. The show, however, did not show the encounter like it actually happened.
"A deer had been seen at the same time, and the family and the SOSBI members thought that the Bigfoot might have been hunting it. The children just happened to be in the right place at the right time to see the creature.
"The show, however, made it seem like the Bigfoot was stalking the kids. That's one of the many reasons I don't like re-enactments of cryptid sightings on TV shows, because producers always make it seem scarier than it actually was.
"The area where the creature was seen, Morgan's Knob Loop Trail, would be a good area for a Bigfoot to hide. I have hiked on the trail several times and there are no buildings anywhere nearby. If you go to the top of the hill where the Eddys stopped, you can barely see the flag by the lodge on the other side of the park.

Check back for more on The Ohio Monster Guidebook in the future…

Search for the Sea Serpent

Last week I put up a post about an old documentary on some aquatic cryptid I haven't seen in years. While doing some searching for suggestions from others I think I may have found it - and I think it is Search for the Sea Serpent, a Discovery Channel production from 1999.

So far the only places I've found it available online are DVDs in Europe and a VHS tape on Ebay…

The description of the doc is:

"For two hundred and fifty years, residents living around the small Seljord Lake in Norway have reported sightings of a strange, serpent-like creature. Reports began on the Norwegian coast in the seventeenth century, when sailors, terrified by the monster which rose up by their ships, cried out for help and plunged into the sea to escape the threat of death. An international group of investigators has arrived in Seljord to study the breath and length of the lake, trying to fathom exactly what it is that has been frightening local people. The mystery deepens when finally, a member of the team captures an extraordinary and unexplained sight on film."

Since I still haven't been able to find that much more about it online, I again ask, has anyone out there seen Search for the Sea Serpent? If you have, can you recall what happens in it and does it sound like the the documentary I described in the original post?

Tassie Tiger Photographed?

Has a Tasmanian tiger been caught on camera? A new photo from Australia is purported to show one of the thought-to-be-extinct marsupials.
Is a thylacine in the top center? (Thylacine Awareness Group/Daily Mail)

The Daily Mail reports that a trail camera has recorded a thylacine:

"A trail camera has captured an image that has sparked a debate whether one of Australia's lost animals has a sub-species living in Perth.
"The footage was captured on the outskirts of Perth and shows a dog-like animal with an extremely long tail.
"The cameras were placed in the property after the owners said their pet dog was killed by an unknown animal.
"With recent sightings reported of the extinct Tasmanian Tiger roaming around just an hours drive from Perth, an online debate is raging whether the animal could be a fox or a mainland species of thylacine.
"The Tasmanian Tiger or thylacine officially became extinct in 1986, despite the death of the last known thylacine in Herbert Zoo in 1936.
"The Tasmanian Tiger looked like a long dog with stripes and had a heavy stiff tail.
"With debate raging whether the animal could be a fox, Thylacine Awareness Group of Australia founder Neil Waters said it could possibly be a sub species of the thought to be extinct Tasmanian Tiger.
"'My claim is there is more than one species of thylacine's. Tasmanian Tigers in Tasmania were isolated so they probably had a narrower gene pool,' Mr Waters told Daily Mail Australia.
"'With the mainland being bigger there is a lot more scope for a sub species.
"'I agree the head looks like a fox, but the rear end I can't find a fox outline that looks like that. The tail is exceptionally long and even in thickness.
"'It looks like it is covered in fur. It doesn't look like a fox at the rear end.'
"Mr Waters said there have been numerous reported sightings of the Tasmanian Tiger an hours drive from Perth, both historical and recent, but none have been confirmed.
"In November the Thylacine Awareness Group of Australia released special footage of what they believed to be a Tasmanian Tiger captured on trail cameras on a property in Nannup in Western Australia.
"Mr Waters told Daily Main Australia the animal moved exactly like a thylacine.
"'The animal has a very peculiar gait, the way it walks it quite weird,' Mr Waters said.
"'In one of the clips you can clearly see the stripes down the side.'"
Could this be a Tasmanian tiger??

This actually looks quite like a thylacine to me.
 What do you think?

Destination America's Terror in the Woods

From a Destination America press release comes news of a new show:

"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 23, 2017
"CONTACT: Charlotte Fletcher, 240-662-3125
"-New series explores terrifying true stories of wilderness adventures gone very wrong -
"(Silver Spring, Md.) - Destination America today announced that it has commissioned an all-new series Terror in the Woods (wt) (8 x 60') with award-winning UK production company Wild Dreams Films. Production is currently underway.
" Terror in the Woods (wt) investigates the most shocking unexplained paranormal encounters in the wild. From gator hunting in Louisiana's bayou to ice fishing in Illinois, and deer hunts in Montana, these are the real-life stories of people who embarked on an outdoors adventure - only to be scared out of the woods by ghosts, monsters, and other unexplained phenomena.
" They came to discover the great outdoors, but something discovered them first. Venturing into the woods, lakes and mountains of America, the last thing they expected to experience was to come face to face with threatening paranormal entities. Do they panic and make a run for it? Or bunker down inside a cabin, waiting for what's next? How will they escape? Using shocking first hand interviews and cinematic drama reconstruction, these terrifying experiences will be brought to life as hunters become the hunted in the outdoors.
"Additionally, the series has been signed by Distribution360, who will represent the series internationally having begun discussions with broadcasters and platforms about pre-sales in several markets and will be attending Realscreen Summit later this week for further meetings on the new title.
"Terror in the Woods (wt) is produced by Wild Dream Films and Destination America. For Wild Dream Films, Stuart Clark is executive producer. For Destination America, Cathy Garland is executive producer, Jane Latmah is general manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Destination America, and American Heroes Channel."

Big Scratches on a Tree - Must be Bigfoot!

"Bigfoot hunters say claw marks likely evidence of 'Alabama Booger Monster,'" reports, in an article about some people from the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization, whose show Killing Bigfoot will premiere on Destination America Feb. 2nd:

"It was a memorable Friday the 13th for Donald McDonald of the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization. When he was invited to speak at the annual Collard Green Festival in Evergreen earlier this month, he had no idea he'd discover evidence of the legendary creature in Conecuh County.
"But when a resident of the Pine Orchard community pointed out claw marks on a tree in his yard, McDonald determined they couldn't have been made by humans, and it's unlikely they were made by any other animals.
"'Some of those claw marks start at about 8 feet off the ground and go to almost 12 feet,' McDonald said. 'Yes, there are bears in the area but a bear, if it would have made those marks, there would have been bear claw marks on the sides of the tree where it climbed it, there were none.'
"McDonald was accompanied by fellow researcher Michael Humphreys, his co-star on the TV show, "Killing Bigfoot," which airs at 9 p.m. Central Feb 4 on Destination America. Alabama Bigfoot enthusiast Ashly McPhaul of Excel joined the men, and Lee Peacock of The Evergreen Courant tagged along for a story.
"Peacock said he doesn't know what to make of the claw marks. 'I'm a very skeptical person by nature, but I like to keep an open mind. I have never personally seen a Bigfoot, but what I saw at Pine Orchard the other day is hard to ignore,' he said. 'Like true expert trackers, McDonald and Humphreys seem to be able to see things in the woods that most people wouldn't give much attention to. It was a very eye-opening experience for me.' Click here to read his story.
"McDonald and Humphreys didn't do any filming for the TV show while in Alabama but they came to town early to check some Bigfoot sightings reported to GCBRO from people in the area.
"'I had no idea when I was contacted that there were that many reports of these creatures in the area,' he said. (Bigfoot) howls and screams in the area have been heard by several of the locals. Many have seen it cross the road on them and had them around their homes.'
"McDonald said the GCBRO had about 18 reports in the area but when he left Alabama he had as many as 40 reports of sightings. 'Just amazing.'
"According to the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Center website, people have reported seeing Sasquatch in 43 of Alabama's 67 countries.
"McDonald said he didn't get  to the Sepulga River bottoms, an area where about six people have reported 'seven- to 8-foot-tall hairy bipedal creatures crossing the roads, seen coming out of the river and in people's back yards.'
"If the 'Killing Bigfoot' team were to find a creature that threatened humans, they would kill it, McDonald said. 'They are not these forest friends that many people think they are,' he said.
"He said Alabamians have different names for the creature known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch. 'These Bigfoot creatures in Alabama have several local names, he said. 'The Alabama White Thing, and around Evergreen, it's the Alabama Booger Monster. I'm sure there are a lot more local names throughout the state.'
"McDonald said that anyone who'd like to report a sighting can email him at"

Below is a picture of the marks on the tree from Peacock's blog.

Were they made by Bigfoot? You really don't hear reports of Bigfoots using "claws" to scratch up trees, so I honestly doubt that one did this. Peacock says that McDonald and Humphreys picked it out as a Bigfoot because they're "true expert trackers," but I bet is more likely they just have Bigfoot on the brain.  They both seem to think that Bigfoots are violent monsters anyway, which they may be sometimes (like any other animal!), but there are very, very few reports of Sasquatch harming or killing anyone and most of those reports are very old.

A New Search for an Old Nessie Film

Roland Watson is on the hunt for a very old Loch Ness Monster film.
Still from the Taylor film from The Elusive Monster

The Daily Maverick reports:

"Last weekend, a curious notice appeared in the classified advertisements of the Sunday Times. It was an appeal to the public for information on a South African man who may have taken film footage of one of the most mysterious mysteries - or myths - of all time. REBECCA DAVIS was sufficiently intrigued to investigate further.
"'Rsearcher seeks information on Mr G. E. Taylor who took a film of something in Loch Ness in 1938,' ran a tiny advertisement in the 'Personal' section of the most recent Sunday Times classifieds. It was accompanied simply by an e-mail address.
"The man who placed the ad has never been to South Africa. Roland Watson, 54, lives over 9,000 miles away, in Scotland's capital Edinburgh. By day, he works as a software engineer. By night, however, he pursues his real passion: doggedly seeking information to prove the existence of the Loch Ness Monster.
"Rumors of a mysterious creature in Scotland's second largest lake have been circulating since the 7th century. It was in the early 1930s that Nessie fever took off in earnest, when a road was built alongside Loch Ness allowing for motorists to take a good look at its inky waters. Visitors flocked to the area in hope of a monster sighting - and among them was a tourist from South Africa.
"'On the 29th of May 1938, a film of a strange object in Loch Ness was taken by a Mr G. E. Taylor of Natal,' explains Watson.
"By the time Taylor arrived on the banks of Loch Ness with his camera, a number of photographs purporting to show a monster had already surfaced. The most famous, known as the 'Surgeon's Photograph,' was taken by a British doctor called Robert Wilson in 1934. It appeared to show a long, sinuous neck and head extending from a submerged body, and served to galvanize public interest in the Loch Ness Monster.
"Just one problem: the picture was a fake, allegedly staged using a toy submarine. It would take until 1975, however, for the picture to be comprehensively debunked by a British newspaper.
"A year before the Surgeon's Photograph, a Scottish daily ran the story of a local man called Hugh Gray, who had spotted a strange object rising from the lake while out on a walk. Gray took a photograph, which shows a blurred disturbance in the water. Sceptics have subsequently suggested that this 1933 snap is likely to show a dog swimming thought the water while carrying something in its mouth,  rather than anything monstrous.
"Roland Watson, however, is a true believer. Watson runs a website which he describes as 'pro-monster'. One lengthy post is devoted to a passionate defence of the 1933 photograph, including complex pictoral simulations of aquatic dogs and monsters.
"Watson's belief in the monster began as a child and has remained unwavering  ever since.
"'The various sceptical theories - which dismiss photos, films and eyewitness testimonies as birds, logs and boat wakes - are overdone and rely to some degree on the general sceptical environment of today to sustain them,' he says.
"Watson's aim is to 'restore the credibility of the thousands of witnesses who claim to have seen something large and alive in Loch Ness.'
"There are on average about 20 alleged Nessie sightings a year. The 200,000 Google searches for the Loch Ness Monster per month point to the abiding fascination with the notion of such a creature.
"Loch Ness is the perfect lake to hide a mystery, because its waters have been stained dark and impenetrable by peat. Theories about what form the monster could take, if it exists, abound. One idea is that it could be the descendant of a plesiosaur - an aquatic reptile from the age of the dinosaurs - cut off from the sea after the Ice Age, thought there are numerous problems with this theory. It has also been suggested that what people are seeing is some sort of giant fish or eel.
"Since the 1930s, there have been a number of other photographs and video clips of an alleged monster, with many proven fake. The reason why Watson is so bent on learning more about the South African tourist who visited Loch Ness in 1938 is because the visitor is believed to have taken the first color footage of a potential sighting.
"In the extensive Nessie literature, references to G. E. Taylor abound. But they always contain the same few facts: it was 1938, G. E. Taylor was a tourist from Natal, and he filmed something in the lake for three minutes on 16mm color film.
"Taylor is known to have sent the footage to a Nessie investigator called Maurice Burton, thought to have been one of the only people to see the film. Burton included a still from the footage in his 1961 book The Elusive Monster, but did not make a copy of the film and is believed to have sent it back to South Africa.
"'And so the film mysteriously submerged like its claimed monster,' Watson tells the Daily Maverick.
"Watson has been on the hunt for the film for years. 'I contacted Maurice Burton's family and also made enquiries about whether it may have appeared in the newsreels of the 1930s produced by the African Mirror.' A search in the South African National Film, Video and South Archives proved fruitless.
"'I have resorted to placing adverts in South African newspapers,' Watson says. 'The film may have decayed away by now, but there is still hope that a copy was made and retained by a living relative of Mr Taylor.'
"For Nessie buffs like Watson, the dream is that Taylor's footage could prove to be the smoking gun after all these years.
"'It's part of the Nessie folklore: often talked about, but never seen,' Watson says. 'This may be one of the clearest films taken of the creature, but that cannot be assessed until it is seen once more.'
"Watson has frequently travelled north to Loch Ness in the hope of spotting the monster himself. Any luck?
"'Not yet,' he says."

If anyone out there knows more about the Taylor film, please comment. Let's help Watson find it!
The film was discussed in this book...

"Killing Bigfoot" Premieres in February

In February, a new show called Killing Bigfoot will be premiering on Destination America. The channel put out this information:

"(Silver Spring, Md.) - Deep in the heart of Texas, Bobby Hamilton has been on the hunt for Bigfoot ever since encountering the monster as a child. Decades later, the world still doesn't have definitive proof of Bigfoot's existence. That's where Bobby, his friend Jim Lansdale, and their team of monster hunters, known as the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization (GCBRO), have decided to take matters into their own hands. Down south, the hunters believe a sleeker, faster and more aggressive type of Bigfoot is attacking people's homes, farm animals and pets. In the all new series KILLING BIGFOOT, GCBRO is on a mission to help families terrorized by Bigfoot and prove once and for all that the fables creature exists by killing one specimen - and providing a body of definitive scientific proof. The six-episode first season of KILLING BIGFOOT premieres Saturday, February 4 at 10/9c on Destination America.
"Under Bobby and Jim's leadership, the members of GCBRO come from vastly diverse backgrounds including civil engineering, IT and corporate technology, and private investigation and surveillance. The team also includes former cops, National Guard and military veterans, a medical tech, and even a coroner's 'body removal specialist.' GCBRO's main goal is to help those frightened by alleged recent encounters with Bigfoot, but however well intentioned GCBRO's mission may be, their extreme objective to kill even one Bigfoot puts them at odds with many in the crypto-zoological community who do not want to see one dead.
"This season of KILLING BIGFOOT includes the following episodes:
"Season Premiere: Saturday, February 4 at 10/9c
"Three members of GCBRO speak at the Honobia Bigfoot Conference in Oklahoma, where they meet angry resistance from those who want Bigfoot left in peace. The team is called away to Louisiana, where new evidence has been unearthed following an alleged Bigfoot hit and run: a tiny primate-like skull with teeth, which they sent to a DNA lab for testing. Several locals have reported seeing a small orangutan-like creature and hearing monkey-like sounds near the woods. GCBRO organize a night hunt during which they have a frightening close encounter and then possibly capture footage of Bigfoot itself.
"Saturday, February 11 at 10/9c
"A report comes in to the GCBRO of a terrifying Bigfoot encounter on the Dyess family's 5,000-acre wooded farm in the swampy Sabine River area of southwest Louisiana. Family members have heard mysterious screaming at night a taken casts of huge, unidentified animal tracks found on the property. GCBRO steps in to try to bring peace to the Dyess farm and, in the process, has a possible nighttime encounter with Bigfoot. Meanwhile, GCBRO has a run-in with their old teammate-turned-rival Dr. Web Sentell, a neuro-psychologist and Bigfoot no-kill advocate who wants to prove he can find one of the creatures using gentle, alternative: flute playing and food offerings. The benefits of killing or not killing Bigfoot in the South becomes a major argument between Sentell and GCBRO.
"Saturday, February 18 at 10/9c
"With cases flooding into GCBRO headquarters, Jim is intrigued by the reports but overwhelmed by requests for assistance. They need new hunters if they want to keep up with the demand. While Jim and Don Don visit a biker whose family had a face-to-face encounter with Bigfoot deep in the Mississippi woods, the  process of interviewing new recruits begins: culminating in a series of challenging tests. The candidates search might be just as difficult as finding Bigfoot itself, but a night hunt with the most viable recruits shows off the talent they could bring to GCBRO.
"Saturday, February 25 at 10/9c
"The team gets excited  by a report from a woman in east Texas, Anna, who claims she shot at Bigfoot in her backyard to protect her daughter and save her dog. A wounded monster should be easy to track down. GCBRO races down to meet her and check out the game camera photos she captured. Anna shows them an unidentified hair sample she found attached to her shoe that is sent away for DNA analysis. Before embarking on their night hunt back at Anna's property, the team visits a nearby sighting eyewitness who leads the team to possible Bigfoot nests. That evening, the hunt reveals Bigfoot trails, tracks and some very close calls.
"Saturday, March 4 at 10/9c
"GCBRO member Don goes on a local TV show to reach out to the public to come forward with their Bigfoot sightings in the Mississippi area. GCBRO receives a report from a frightened rural family that claims Bigfoot killed several of their dogs and even attacked a young man. The team meets Minnie and her family in a rural farming community, where they will conduct a series of night hunts to get to the bottom of the attacks. The hunt is one when another of the owner's dogs goes missing. A hair sample is brought to Bigfoot forensics expert M.K. Davis.
"Saturday, March 11 at 10/9c
"Jessica and her physically challenged husband Bret live in a heavily wooded area of Texas. They say they're being terrorized by Bigfoot pounding on the walls of their house, and screaming and wailing in the night. Bret also believes he saw a huge Bigfoot run in front of his car, and so he calls GCBRO to try and locate the creature that is frightening them. The team finds tracks around the house, including a huge handprint in the mud that's twice the size of a human hand. The final night hunt of the season sends GCBRO in search of a giant, rogue Bigfoot.
"KILLING BIGFOOT is produced by Gryphon Productions/Monster Hunters Productions for Destination America. For Gryphon Productions, Peter von Puttkamer is executive producer and Sheera von Puttkamer is producer. For Destination America, Fay Yu is executive producer, Jane Latman is general manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel, and Destination America."

So, I guess the question is if Killing Bigfoot is going to be Mountain Monsters-esque or not. From the descriptions of the episodes it sounds to me like it will be. Also interesting is it now apparently seems like every Bigfoot living in Texas or Louisiana is a violent monster that like attacking people's houses. You don't usually hear reports from people who need "protected" like those in the show. Also funny to me is that they need "new recruits" because of an overwhelming number of reports (especially if they are all reports of Bigfoots acting aggressively!)

My bet is they'll go someplace, do a "night hunt" the first night, interview people and have arguments, then do a second "night hunt" where there will be lots of language, fighting amongst the group, and, amazingly, encounters with a Bigfoot (and an aggressive one at that!) every time. I'll post my thoughts on the show when it airs…

Finding Bigfoot "Return to Four Corners"

A new Finding Bigfoot is on tonight at 9 on Animal Planet.

Tonight's episode is "Return to Four Corners:"

"The team returns to the Four Corners of America to find all their previous witnesses have been plagued by recent activity. A wide search of all four states, leads to their most intricate strategy yet in hopes of capturing footage of a bigfoot."

The Mysterious Lake Monster Documentary?

If anyone could help me recall what this show was it would be greatly appreciated....

Back about 5-6 years ago when Destination America was Planet Green, they used to play some documentary on a lake monster (and I can't remember which one). They also would play America's Loch Ness Monster and The Loch Ness Monster Revealed and I know it isn't either of those. I never really saw it because it was always on around midnight or in the early morning although I do remember seeing part of it once but all I remember from it is the group out investigating the creature getting in some huge argument about something, and I think they were in a cabin or something of the sort. I think it was made sometime in the late '90s or early 2000s and the title had something to do with searching for a lake monster or sea serpent, but that is it. I cannot remember what it was and haven't seen it on in years. So, for years I've been wondering what it was and would like to watch it if I can find it online, but since I don't remember what it was called, I can't do that either. I've tried searching things like "sea serpent/lake monster documentaries 2001" and years around that, but that too has led to nothing. But now I've thought of something that I (surprisingly) haven't thought of before - asking for info on this blog! So, If anyone reading this might know what documentary I'm talking about, please comment and let me know!!!

-UPDATE: Later I did find this doc and got an old VHS tape (!) of it, and I review it here...

Below is a short promotional video for the book, (complete with a Lyle voiceover with his voice deepened a bit probably so you wouldn't recognize it. But I do!)

Vote for the Best Destination America Show

You can go to and vote for which Destination America show you think is the best... Mountain Monsters and Alaska Monsters got my vote 'cause they're entertaining! Monsters Underground, though... not so much. Didn't see Monsters and Mysteries on the list or it would have gotten a 👍 Too!

Strange Underwater Sounds

A while back I wrote a post about the 52 Hz Whale, and this post is going to be like that one, on the subject of strange underwater sounds.

Soectogram of the Bloop

In 1997, the NOAA recorded an extremely strong underwater sound with an ultra-low frequency. Today, it is known as the "bloop" because of the sound of it. The sound was recorded off the west coast of South America. The NOAA said of the sound: "It rose rapidly in frequency over about one minute and was of sufficient amplitude to be heard on multiple sensors, at a range of over 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles)." The NOAA did not believe that something man-made created the sound. So what was it, being several times louder than the sound of a blue whale, the largest recored animal?

The official answer is that it is nothing more than an icequake. But, there are some who think it may be a massive animal, a true leviathan. Dr. Christopher Fox of the NOAA has said that it may actually be from an animal. David Wolman, a journalist, describes Fox's idea:

"Fox's hunch is that the sound nicknames Bloop is most likely to come from some sort of animal, because its signature is a rapid variation in frequency similar to that of sounds known to be made by marine beasts. There's one crucial difference, however: in 1997 Bloop was detected by sensors up to 4,800 kilometers (3,000 mi) apart. That means it must be far louder than any whale noise, or any other animal noise for that matter. Is it even remotely possible that some creature bigger than any blue whale is lurking in the ocean depths? Or, perhaps more likely, something that is more efficient at making sound?"

Why would it be impossible for something bigger than a blue whale to exist? The oceans are a vast, largely unknown place.

The NOAA first recorded this odd sound in 1991. Called the "Upsweep," it "consists of a long train of narrow-band upsweeping sounds of several seconds in duration each. The source level is high enough to be recorded throughout the pacific."

Since 1991, the source level of the sound has decreased but it can still be heard, and appears to reach peaks in the spring and autumn.

On March 1, 1999, the NOAA recorded a sound called "Julia." The sound lasted 15 seconds and was loud enough to be heard over the whole Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array. The NOAA's conclusion concluded the sound most likely come from a large iceberg that had run aground in Antarctica.

Slow Down

The "Slow Down" was recorded by the NOAA on May 19, 1997. The sound lasts several minutes and decreases in frequency over that time (hence the name). The sound, like Upsweep, has been recorded each year since '97. Again, it is thought to be from a large iceberg.

The Whistle was recorded by the NOAA on July 7, 1997. It is "mysterious audio of what resembles distant whirring." It is thought it is caused by eruptions of underwater volcanoes.

The "Train" sound was recorded on March 5, 1997. Again, the NOAA concluded it is likely from a large, grounded iceberg.

Train sound

The "Bio-Duck" sound was first detected by submarines in the 1960s. It was recorded in the open ocean, along the Australian coast, and Perth Canyon. It has now been identified as coming from Antarctic minke whales.

Book Review: The Monster Book by Nick Redfern

Nick Redfern is my favorite author, so it should be no surprise to those who read this blog that I got his The Monster Book: Creatures, Beasts and Fiends of Nature. Earlier today I finished said book, and this is my review.

The Monster Book is similar to his Bigfoot Book from 2015, in that it covers a wide variety of creatures from across the globe. But, unlike The Bigfooot Book, this one focuses on all types of creepy cryptids, not just big ape-men.
Nick Redfern & I

The book is split into parts, each focusing on a different "type" of cryptid, which are 1.) Unearthly Cats, Deadly Dogs, Werewolves, 2.) Nature Gone Mad, 3.) Reptilians, Amphibians, Dinosaurs, and Worms, 4.) Lake, River, and Ocean Menaces, 5.) Cryptic Apes and Wild Men, 6.) Not So Human, 7.) Flying Beings, 8.) Vampires and Bloodsuckers, 9.) Monsters of Magic and Mind, and 10.) UFO Creatures. Everything from the Loch Ness monsters, to the Flatwoods Monster, yowie, dragons, Dogman, El Cucuy, Mothman, black panthers, and chupacabras is covered, as well as everything in-between.

If you have an interest in cryptids, monsters, and strange beings, definitely check out The Monster Book.

Coelacanths and Secrets...

Not new by publication date, but new to me as I just got them today… A 2001 book, A Fish Caught in Time (about the Coelacanth) by Samantha Weinberg and Nick Redfern and Andy Roberts' 2003 book Strange Secrets: Real Government Files on the Unknown.

Both look quite interesting!

"Milwaukee Lion" Filmed on Security Camera

Security camera footage captured January 1st has led some to believe that a mysterious cat is roaming Milwaukee. reports:

"MILWAUKEE, Jan 4 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin resident's outdoor security camera captured some mysterious feline footage that has reignited rumors about a so-called 'Milwaukee Lion.'
"Isaiah Hair said he received an alert on his phone early Jan. 1 alerting him to movement detected by the security camera in his front yard, leading him to check the footage.
"The video revealed what appears to be a large feline strolling across Hair's yard.
"'People gonna say it's like a regular house cat,' Hair told WISN-TV. 'I've seen house cats on my camera before, and they didn't seem that long, that tall.'
"The footage reignited rumors that stemmed from a July 2015 video that showed what looks like a mountain lion wandering Milwaukee's Brewer's Hill neighborhood. Police and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources investigated the sighting, but no animal was ever located or positively identified.
"DNR officials say they suspect the animal in Hair's video was a common house cat."

Check out a news clip from WISN 12 News about the cat below:

Doesn't look like a house cat to me! "It's not your average ally cat."

The one thing I do know, is that the new news coverage is better than the one from a few years ago… yeesh.

"It's a lion lion!"

Finding Bigfoot Returns Tonight

Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot is returning tonight at 9pm with a new season premiere. The BFRO team of Matt Moneymaker, James "Bobo" Fay, Cliff Barackman, and Ranae Holland are back, with some help.

Tonight's episode is called "The Family that Squatches Together:"

"With the help of family and friends, the team is investigating sightings along the Appalachian Trail. With a possible squatch in their midst, the group descends on a location along the trail, hoping for a squatchy night in the wilds of Appalachia."

Recently, Bobo also posted a photo of what may be a Bigfoot on his Facebook page. The return of the Jacobs creature?

Book Review: Monsters Among Us by Linda S. Godfrey

Linda Godfrey is one of my favorite authors, and in October of 2016 her most recent book Monsters Among Us: An Exploration of Otherworldly Bigfoots, Wolfmen, Portals, and Odd Phenomena was released.

This book focuses on the idea that portals and other things of the sort might have some connection to sightings of Bigfoot, Dogman, and other strange creatures, and things like "ghost lights" and UFOs.

There's many an odd story in this book, including some about shape shifters (yes, people turning into Dogman-like monsters), underground monsters in caves and tunnels, the Skinwalker Ranch in Utah, mysterious, disappearing lights and UFOs, shadowy, home invading things, and invisible beings. It all makes for an excellent read.

I must say that this book is definitely one of the creepiest I've read in a long time. I've been interested in this kind of stuff for years and something has to be really creepy to,.. creep me out at all. And some stories in this book did. So, with that said, be sure to read it late at night when the lights are off and you can't see outside….

You can get Monsters Among Us here.

Jacobs Bigfoot or a Bear?

The other day James "Bobo" Fay from Finding Bigfoot posted this photo on Facebook. The return of the Jacobs creature?

Here's what he had to say:

"The return of The Jacobs Creature? Trail cam photo from Clara Country PA. Date was actually Fall 2015. I think it's a bear but others not so sure. What do y'all think? PS 2 hr Season Premiere of all new Finding Bigfoot this Sunday 1/8/17 9pm!! Update: Not a hoax. It's a living animal in PA. super solid witness."

Some people, like Bobo, are saying a bear, others think its a hoax, and others think it looks like the Jacobs Bigfoot, caught on  a trail camera in Pennsylvania in 2007. Some think the creature is a juvenile Bigfoot. Below are the Jacobs photos for comparison to the new one.
1- bear cubs can be seen
2- something strange

What do you think?
