The Walhonding "Ape"

In 1919, it was reported that two men, C. H. Hood and R. B. Gauly, saw an "ape" near Walhonding, Ohio. The ape was "hiding in a dense thicket not far from the railroad track." The two said that the creature was sitting on its haunches and eating something.

The two had no weapons, so they just watched the animal until it started to leave. They followed it a little ways, at one point throwing a rock at it, causing them to be "answered with loud, intensified chattering."

The men were "satisfied without a doubt that the animal was an ape" and told their story in Walhonding and Coshocton. Other reports soon came in, saying that the ape was seen by Paul Branfield near Barnhill and by others in Tuscarawas County.

Later, however, Hood said that the animal they saw was definitely not an ape, but only a groundhog! Was he just trying to calm people down who were terrified to even let their children go outside, or was the whole thing a big hoax, and they really did see a groundhog? That we don't know.
I can't see the resemblance
