Have you ever heard of the Dewey Lake Monster? If you are someone like me, you may have, but just don't know it. This Bigfoot-like creature is also called the Sister Lakes Monster or the Michigan Bigfoot and was seen near Sister Lakes in Michigan (duh!) in 1964.
Locals to the area had known about the creature for several years until sightings took off in June, 1964. After sightings were reported lots of hunters came into the area to try to bag themselves a Bigfoot. Paul Parrish, the sheriff at the time, once found some giant, human-like footprints. "There were big footprints," He said. "A lot bigger than normal. We took plaster casts of them, but they were in sandy soul and not very clear."
One family said the monster was prowling behind their house on several occasions. They had dogs that would chase off intruders, but they wouldn't go after the creature. (Dogs, even big 'ol mean ones, rarely ever go after Bigfoots. Bigfoots and dogs do not like each other at all, and the former is known to kill the latter.) One of their dogs did go after the monster, and when it returned it was temporarily blind in one eye. Most descriptions of the creature said it was the feet tall, with long arms, and glowing eyes, although some witnesses did not see eyes.
The Kalamazoo Gazette described a police hunt for the monster on June 11, 1964. They went with spotlights but did not spot it. "Whatever it is, it's supposed to have eyes that are big, bright, and high." One officer said. One witness described the thing in another Gazette article: "It's eyes shone like those of an animal with night vision." The witnesse's wife also had an encounter with the monster one night. She went outside the back door and saw the "thing" approaching. The ground "rumbled" from its weight.
Like with all Bigfoot/cryptid flaps, there was also a lot of joking. Officer Paul Parrish said people would joke that "Bigfoot will get you" if you weren't careful. A local restaurant offered "Monster Burgers." (Bigfoot sure can be good advertising!) Some skin divers even explored the lake for the monster. (Why would Bigfoot be underwater?) Others thought a big bear or possibly a chimpanzee was on the loose in the Sister Lakes area. To this day, no one knows what the Dewey Lake/Sister Lakes Monster really was.

I was there in 64 at Sister Lakes, on the farm of Henry Utrup, my grandfather..I was just a kid, but I think one of the family's that spotted it, was one of my uncles...We have known about this for over 50 years. Many of the family still lives in the area.
